Early on in our relationship it was evident that Jesus was going to use the image of little children to humble us and teach us about how His kingdom operates. In our very first prayer time, prophesy broke out and we both saw two little kids running on a playground laughing. We had no idea that this one picture would literally become the face of who we are.
Have you ever sat from afar and simply watched little children? They are so innocent and carefree. They do not care what other people think of them. They forgive almost instantly. They stick close to their parents and feel the most safe when mom and dad are right by their side. Have you ever seen a lost child? They are crying their eyes out. They long to feel safe and protected. Children are the best at soaking up love. They cannot get enough hugs and kisses. Have you ever seen the kids in the grocery store crying and reaching their arms up saying, “hold me, hold me”? When did we become so mature that we stopped needing the same things from our Father above? He so longs to give us the same attention that our parents gave us from long ago.

The Lord desires us to be just like this. He wants us to admit our dependence on Him in absolutely everything. We cannot come to Him and think we know it all (or anything). We are to enter in soft and pliable, willing to do anything He asks. We are to come into His presence not knowing anything. We are to simply bow, surrendering to the one that will lead our every step if we allow Him. A good dad gives great advice and direction to his son or daughter. Our job is to simply adore Him, trust His ways and listen to what He says. Isn't that what brings children into their greatest blessings as they grow up?

In Europe on our honeymoon, Max and I woke to pray and I remember the Lord speaking very clearly to me about how He wanted us to enter into prayer. He said you are always to enter in like little children, never like a King or a Queen. He said we are always to be like children first. He said to think we are something greater than Him, when we are merely made of dirt, will lead us on a path of pride. He also said until a man recognizes he is most destitute, without God he will most surely fall. The Lord had been showing us our sinful ways. We can say a lot of great things with our mouths yet in our voice we can be carrying around a lot of arrogance and pride.
As Max and I were trying to figure out how He wanted us to be seen and known I woke one morning with a wild encounter. I saw Jesus in the kitchen smiling while baking bread. I saw Him stirring the bowl and setting a loaf of bread on the table. What I saw next was very surprising. It was a table set for two little kids. They were laughing as they waited. I then saw a beautiful wooden table with one loaf of bread and one glass of wine. I saw the children sitting and happily eating the bread He had made. I began to prophesy to Max and say we will always be known as little children. I knew at this point those two children were me and Max. We would eat at the Master’s table together and drink from His cup.

It was a beautiful illustration of the Fathers love and how He saw not only our marriage but also our ministry. The Lord said this would keep us humble. We had been writing chapters of books and articles weekly and the Lord said if you ever try to own these words they will fade away as quick as they came. We knew then that He was very serious about the work He was giving us. What an honor, what a privilege, glory be to His name!
Will you take the challenge of being like a child again? Will you enter His presence with a hunger to be held and loved on? Will you sit at the table like a child and eat of His bread and drink from His cup? He longs to hold you in all of your seasons. He longs to give you joy that manifests in laughter just like you did when you were a child. Wouldn't it be nice to be so carefree again where worry is not even a word in your vocabulary?
